Hartford, Connecticut is known as the insurance capital of the world, with several major insurance companies headquartered in the city. Located along the Connecticut River in central Connecticut, the state capital boasts a rich history of nearly 400 years. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block first visited the area in 1614, and fur traders from the New Netherland colony established a post at Fort Good Hope in 1623. Though the post was abandoned in 1654, the neighborhood surrounding the site is still known as Dutch Point.

In 1635, English settlers arrived in the area and established the community of Newtown, which was renamed Hartford in 1637. Thomas Hooker, founder and leader of the Connecticut colony, wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in 1639; as the Orders granted the authority of governance to the people instead of a higher power, some historians view Hooker's document as a forerunner to the U.S. Constitution. Delegations from the five New England states gathered at the Hartford Convention in 1814, during which time Hartford's leaders proposed a possible secession from the United States. A hotbed of abolitionist activity by the early 19th century, Hartford was home to Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin.

An international leader of the insurance industry since the establishment of The Hartford Financial Services Group in 1810, Hartford in the 21st century is undergoing considerable renewal. Several redevelopment projects have been completed, including the Connecticut Center for Science and Exploration, expansion of riverfront parks, new housing units at Adriaen's Landing and improvements in the neighborhoods of Parkville and Park Street. The city is served by two major hospitals: Hartford Hospital just south of downtown and Saint Francis Hospital in the West End.

Hartford has long been known for its arts and was recently ranked among the top 20 best cities for the arts by "Places Rated Almanac". Today there are two professional theatres and several semi-professional and amateur theatre companies in the city. Hartford offers six major parks and two public golf courses. Bushnell Park, the oldest public park in America, was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man behind New York City's Central Park. The Rose Garden in Elizabeth Park is the third largest in the U.S., boasting 15,000 roses. The City also offers three riverfront parks with launches on the Connecticut River.
